Tigers’ 18-0 mid-week shutout was first 2019 game decided by mercy rule

Highlights from Prince George’s Senior Men’s Baseball League (PGSBL) from the week ending on Friday (June 14).

Tuesday, June 11

  • 8 - Prince George Surg Med Midget Knights
  • 5 - D.O.B Contracting Gladiators

Seven of the contest’s 13 runs came in the opening frame, which had the Knights at a 4-3 lead with six to play.

Doug Clark’s double in the sixth for the Gladiators led to a 5-5 tie going in the final inning of regulation.


The Knights got hot on the sticks to get to that eight-run mark thanks to RBIs by Leigh Peebles, Kalin Gibbs, and Luka Kim.

Wednesday, June 12

  • 0 - JRJ Construction Orioles
  • 0 - Queensway Auto World Red Sox

Postponed due to inclement weather and a make-up game is to be scheduled for a later date.

Thursday, June 13

  • 18 - Inland Control and Service Tigers
  • 0 - D.O.B Contracting Gladiators

A five-run opening frame catapulted the Tigers to the shutout victory in only five innings.

The team also had a game-high six runs in the third and 19 hits that included 13 RBIs.

Pitcher Cory Taylor had three strikeouts, the batter got caught looking each time, and had some help from his fielders with seven fly-outs.

Friday, June 14

  • 5 - Queensway Auto World Red Sox
  • 3 - Prince George Surg Med Midget Knights

Third-baseman Brandon Hunter hit a two-run homer over the left-centerfield wall in the first inning, while Pitcher Curtis Sawchuk threw 13 strikeouts to keep the Red Sox undefeated.

The Knights were down 5-0 going into the bottom of the sixth frame, but an RBI double from Kolby Lukinchuk deep into left field scored two.

The comeback fell short in the seventh, despite getting one more score.

  • 6-0 = Red Sox
  • 4-2 = Tigers
  • 2-2 = Orioles
  • 2-4 = Knights
  • 0-6 = Gladiators

There are five games at Citizen Field next week, one each night, starting Monday (June 17) with the Gladiators hosting the defending-champion Orioles at 7 p.m.
