Volunteer Prince George is continuing to be the main portal for matching people willing to help out with organizations dedicated to various good causes.

And while Prince George is known for its high rate of volunteerism, there's plenty room for more.

"We have a list of volunteer positions for about 125 organizations," said program manager Jo Nore, who added the organization recruits 800 to 900 volunteers each year.

One of the biggest barriers to becoming a volunteer is the time commitment but Nore said organizations are trying to address that by being more flexible and providing more short-term opportunities.

"It's a matter of the person looking at the list and saying 'well, I can't volunteer for the next six months or a year but I can volunteer for this event for this weekend or I can go once a week,'" Nore said.

Some positions require training and so it's hoped those who step up for those spots stick around, Nore added.

The need is expected to be especially high in the lead up to the 2015 Canada Winter Games, which will require 4,500 volunteers to pull off.

And while Volunteer Prince George is helping the Games on that front, the Games is also helping Volunteer Prince George.

In a campaign that began Monday with the start of National Volunteer Week, and ends at 4:30 today, the Games is donating $2.15 for each new volunteer who signs up for the event through Volunteer Prince George.
