City crews found themselves at same location they were at nearly six weeks ago but dealing with a different problem when they were called to the corner of Winnipeg Street and 20th Avenue on Tuesday afternoon.
Rather than a sinkhole caused by a crack in a storm drain line, they faced a torrent of water bubbling up onto the street caused by the failure of a joint in the water transmission system.
"It's not a repeat problem," city associate director of public works Gina Layte Liston said. "Two very different systems."
City workers were called to the scene at about 2:30 p.m. and by about 9:30 p.m. a new piece of pipe had been installed and the water was back on. Five homes in the area were affected but a nearby apartment building was not one of them because it is on a different line, Layte Liston said.
Traffic was slowed somewhat as workers were forced to close off the northbound lanes on Winnipeg Street. It took about two-and-a-half days to deal with the sinkhole that emerged at the same spot in late August.
