Watch your credit card to prevent being skimmed, says a Richmond RCMP officer.

Cpl. Sherrdean Turley tells of an arrest of a 15-year-old youth working at a gas station who had a six-month crime spree of skimming customers paying with credit cards.

Turley said the youth is suspected of "discretely copying customers credit card data and selling the information to organized crime groups for the purpose of making fraudulent credit card purchases.

More than 100 credit cards were compromised and more than $1 million was put at risk.

The youth, with recommended charges of unauthorized possession of credit card data and possession of a credit card forging instrument, will face his first court appearance Aug. 18. Turley advises the public: Never lose sight of a payment card; scrutinize statements for any suspicious transactions; shred documents with personal or account information; watch for suspicious people at ATM's and always protect your PIN.
