The forecast for the long weekend is predicting warmer and drier temperatures across the region, so the Prince George Fire Centre is reminding the public, especially campers to be extra cautious with fires this weekend.
For people who are going to spend the weekend in the woods, the centre is reminding people to ensure fires are not lit in windy conditions and to pack the necessary tools and water to contain a fire to ensure the flames are fully extinguished before leaving the area.
"The unsettled weather and cool conditions in most of the province, this fire season has been one of the slowest of record," said Steve Thomson, minister of forests, lands and natural resource operations. "Although 27 per cent of the fires in Prince George Fire Centre have been a result of carelessness - below the seasonal average - I am urging people to remain vigilant with outdoor burning and to remember that a wildfire can start in an instant, even in cooler weather."
Firefighters have responded to 74 fires across the Prince George Fire Centre this year, which have consumed 381 hectares.
