In Prince George the selling of Girl Guide cookies has become rite of spring with funds going towards programs which help girls across the nation enjoy activities and learn valuable life skills, said Laurie Hooker, a Girl Guide leader.

"The cookies are the official fund raiser for Girl Guides of Canada, giving the 500 members in the local area the tools and resources needed to achieve greatness in every area of their lives," Hooker said.

On Friday, uniformed Sparks, Brownies, Girl Guides, Pathfinders and Ranger units will begin the task of selling 18,000 boxes of chocolate and vanilla cookies to Prince George and area residents at $4 per box.

For more than 100 years the Girl Guides of Canada have been a trailblazing organization advocating for girls and women.

It started in 1909 when girls in England demanded to take part in a Boy Scouts rally organized by Lord Baden-Powell. He was so impressed he asked his sister Agnes to create a program for girls. She did. Guiding got underway, and the rest is history.

The very next year, the movement reached Canada with the first unit formed in St. Catherine's, Ont., and by 1912 there were units in every province.

So a group of forward-thinking mothers banded together to form the Canadian Girl Guides Association with Lady Mary Pellatt as Canada's first chief commissioner. Today there are about 116,000 Canadian members in the movement.
