VP is a hands-on title at Senior Activity Centre

For one member of the P.G. & District Senior Activity Centre Society, vice president isn't just a figurehead title.

It's a hands-on, tools-in-your-pocket, kneeling on the floor, grunt-work kind of title.

Elmo Sturgeon, best known as Mo, helps to set up and tear down the hall, organizes the carpet bowling and the walking program and is the general handyman who keeps things running smoothly day in and day out at the centre.

"If it was open seven days a week, I would come to the centre seven days a week but it's only open six, so I come six," said Sturgeon, 78, who became a member of the centre in 2000. "I'm down here every day. It's my second home."

Most days Sturgeon stays at the centre from about 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.

"People my own age are here and that's the people who I like to talk to," said Sturgeon, who has a long history in Prince George and points out a friend he's known since he came here in 1957.

"So I am amongst friends here that I've know for a long time. It's a really pleasant place to come and people are really friendly."

Sturgeon preps the space for carpet bowling by laying the carpet that is set on a giant roll. It requires some brute-force strength to get that thing rolling in the right direction.

Sturgeon enjoys carpet bowling and indoor curling equally and during the summer months he lawn bowls at the outdoor Watrous location as well.

Sturgeon, who has three children and 10 grandchildren, keeps guests of the centre safe by making sure all the chairs are solid and it's not unusual to see him hunkered over a chair screwing it back together on any given day.

"Mo is just amazing," said Trianda Cuthbert, administrator for the Prince George & District Senior Activity Centre. "He's just one of these people who just does and does and does and does and he doesn't complain ever and never has a bad word to say about anybody or anything. He's just amazing and has a great sense of humour as well."

Sturgeon keeps busy, fit and healthy by leading the walking program once a week that sees a group of seniors head to Masich Place Stadium during mild weather and to Rolling Mix Concrete Arena in the colder weather. Sturgeon enjoys dancing at least twice a week and carpools a group around town to get to the dances.

"I think I look forward to that the most," said Sturgeon, who has been married to his wife, Alice, for 54 years.

Sturgeon keeps busy at home doing jigsaw puzzles and creates small tokens signifying a hug that he keeps on hand as gifts in case anyone at the centre needs their day made a little brighter.

To become a member of the P.G. & District Senior Activity Centre Society at 425 Brunswick St., it's $20 a year.
