A longtime Prince George Blizzard Speed Skating Club volunteer has made the finals of a different sort of event.
Ariadne Holness de Hiller, mother of two local skaters competing in these Canada Winter Games - son Nico and daughter Carolina, both in long-track events - is up for a national sport tourism award. She was nominated by Tourism Prince George for the Canadian Sport Tourism Alliance's 2015 PRESTIGE Award in the sports tourism category.
"Ariadne was nominated for her tremendous contribution to the sport of speed skating both in Prince George and across the country, but particularly for her involvement as meet coordinator of the 2014 Canadian age class short track championship that took place in March of last year," said Tourism Prince George spokesman Michael Stanyer.
"The event featured 70 athletes, 50 officials, coaches and families from across Canada," he added. "Although this might seem small, the stakes were high. It was the first opportunity for the newly-renovated Kin 1 arena to be competition-tested prior to the 2015 Canada Winter Games. Transportation, timing systems, logistics, officials, accreditation systems, medical and food services, and Prince George's capacity for hosting an event of this calibre were all tested - clearly, no room for error. Ariadne oversaw the entire competition and ensured a successful event."
Blizzard coach Corine Masich went so far as to say "Ariadne WAS the test event."
