Latino-Canadian Association of Northern B.C. presents the second annual Latin Festival June 13 at the Hart Community Centre.

Latino-Canadian Association of Northern B.C. presents the second annual Latin Festival June 13 at the Hart Community Centre.

The association, with 73 members from 14 Latin countries, will offer a night of Latin American culture and cuisine including dance like salsa, merengue, cumbia and vallenatos; dinner, and an opportunity to swing at a pinata filled with surprises like sweets and gift certificates.

Members, who mainly come from Chile, Mexico, Peru, El Salvador and Venezuela have lived in Prince George from one to 30 years with the first-to-come members being Carmen and Ricardo Leiva.

Giulliana Tamblyn, association president, said it was on "a cold, rainy day at West Lake" a few years ago that a group of Latin friends decided to establish the association to preserve their Spanish language, customs and Latin culture through events.

"The longer we live in Canada, the more we lose our culture," said Tamblyn who said members mostly miss their families and the warmer weather, but cherish the social and economic stability found in Canada.

Music at the festival will be supplied by a Latin band from Vancouver and the party will offer a licensed bar.

Dress to feel comfortable to dance the night away, said Tamblyn.

Tickets, at Books and Company, are $60 . For more information call Tamblyn at 250-962-5054.
