Virus removed from website, Glacier Media official says

The cause of a breach that allowed a computer virus to attack a number of websites for Glacier Media's B.C.

The cause of a breach that allowed a computer virus to attack a number of websites for Glacier Media's B.C. newspapers has been identified but the source of the problem remained unknown according to the company's vice president of digital services, Paul Hecht.

"We are unable to comment on the source because we are verifying that and we are trying to do everything we can to ensure that our sites are back up and running and are safe for our users to visit and enjoy as they always have," Hecht said late Tuesday afternoon.

The Prince George Citizen website was among those affected Tuesday as visitors were greeted with a warning from Google stating the site appeared to contain malicious software that may harm the visitor's computer.

"Your computer can be infected just by browsing to a site with malware, without any further action on your part," the warning states.

The problem has since been dealt with, Hecht said.

"We believe the sites are now fine, it's a question of making sure that all the relevant indexes validate that at this point," Hecht continued and added it affected only "select" websites in the B.C. region.

"Security measures have been put in place to ensure that it doesn't happen again," he also noted.
