B.C. residents should have received their referendum ballots in the mail this week.

As we all know by now, the province is asking British Columbians whether they want to change the current voting system of first-past-the-post to a model of proportional representation (PR).

One of the issues is understanding how the different PR models work.

In that vein, Double Blind, a group of B.C. filmmakers, made their own video to try to explain how the three systems operate, without breaking down the math.

(For anyone wondering, they are not financially backed by anyone.)

The less-than-five-minute video discusses dual-member proportional, mixed-member proportional and rural-urban proportional in an even-handed way and explains the essential concepts behind each. While it is a simplification of the systems, it should give you a basic understanding of PR.
