"Wow. Are you sure you have the right person?! I am flattered, speechless and whatever other word you can use."
That was the immediate reaction of local resident John Murphy, the latest recipient of the BC Community Achievement Award.
Murphy has been an active community volunteer for as long as Vanderhoof residents can remember. He was a 15 year volunteer firefighter, a community and recreation fundraiser and he lead the effort to build a much-needed 33-unit seniors' residence.
Murphy continues to make a difference in Vanderhoof by contributing his knowledge and skills to a project to build an activity centre for seniors. Murphy was nominated for this prestigious award by the newly organized Volunteer Vanderhoof.
While gathering information for Murphy's nomination, he was described as, "a person who is dedicated to creating a better community."
Another comment stated: "Driven. Once John sets a goal he is very determined to make it happen. He has great ideas, is a very social person with great community connections, incredibly experienced in fundraising and project management. He has incredible foresight, he can see how things will play out."
And yet another stated Murphy is "Very community minded. He is always there to help when something needs doing. He's always there..."
Murphy will be presented with his British Columbia Community Achievement Award in a ceremony in Victoria on April 20.
Premier Christie Clark will be on hand to bestow this honour on John.
