Two people died in Wednesday afternoon's head-on collision north of Quesnel, RCMP traffic services has confirmed.
Both victims were in the car that police said crossed the centre line while heading south on Highway 97 and collided with an oncoming chip truck near Brookwood Ranch.
Emergency personnel were called to the scene at 3:41 p.m. The truck's driver was uninjured.
"Witnesses to the crash have been interviewed and say that the car went into the path of the chip truck with no reasonable explanation," Cpl. Madonna Saunderson said.
Anyone else who witnessed the crash or either of the vehicles prior to the collision are asked to contact the RCMP. A description of the car was unavailable due to the extensive damage while the chip truck was pulling two large yellow containers.
The highway was reopened shortly after midnight Thursday and RCMP and the B.C. Coroners Service continue to investigate.
The identities of the victims are not being released at this time, pending notification of next of kin.
