Only one structure was lost in a fire at Cluculz Lake on Meier Road East Thursday night.

"The winds were in our favour last night so the fire didn't spread to any other cabins - thank goodness," said Gail Poisson, deputy chief of the Cluculz Lake Volunteer Fire Department.

The call was received by the fire department at about 9:15 p.m. and the cabin was completely engulfed in flames when the fire department arrived on the scene.

There were no injuries. There were three fire trucks, seven fire fighters on scene and many by-standers assisted, Poisson added.

"There is an environmental issue as there was some hydraulic fluid that leaked into the lake from a drum that was one its side," said Poisson. "I do know that Environment Canada will be on scene this morning to evaluate the situation."

The structure that was destroyed by the fire was a summer cabin and no one was home at the time.

"I am to understand the gentleman had been at the cabin the day before (Wednesday) painting or something so there is some speculation and it's just speculation that it was started by fumes," said Poisson. "Like I say there was nobody there and somebody heard a boom and that's all we know. So now we're going to go back and do some investigating so it's all speculation at this point."

Forestry was on scene last night, along with response teams from the RCMP and the ambulance, she added.

"The potential for the fire to spread was immense so we were very lucky," said Poisson. "The cabins are very close in proximity to this cabin and the cabin that was two cabins away from the one that was burning is the year-round house of one of our fire fighters. Thank goodness nobody got hurt."
