The union representing 700 workers at Finning's operations in B.C. and The Yukon say that a strike will start at 4 p.m.

"We met with Finning again today, and continue to be available for meetings - we are working for a fair contract. However, Finning has not given us an offer that will get us a deal," the International Association of Machinist and Aerospace Workers, district 250, said on its website today.

"Accordingly, we are implementing full Strike action at 4 p.m. today," said the union.

The union had been in position to strike on Monday afternoon, but talks had continued.

Earlier today, Finning confirmed it had issued 72-hour lockout notice.

The company was not saying immediately when the lockout notice was issued, but workers in Prince George said they were told Monday evening the lockout notice would be served before midnight that day.

At issue has been wages, benefits, contract duration, employee pensions and contract language.

The union represents about 100 workers at the Prince George branch, which is a supply and service centre for northern B.C. in the mining and forestry sectors.

Finning also has operations in Houston and Terrace in northern B.C.

The two-year collective agreement expired on April 14.
