The annual United Way Tree of Lights campaign surpassed its fundraising goal to support social service programs in Prince George.
The 24-day campaign raised a total of $52,546, according to a statement released by the United Way of Northern B.C. on Dec. 23.
“People from all walks of life and financial positions have come together to make such a difference in this community,” local United Way executive director Trista Spencer said. “ From the change in someone’s pocket to the significant contributions from our sponsors, it all came together. The United Way Tree of Lights is about more than a tree. It’s a symbol of hope and of who we are as northern B.C. people.”
The non-profit sector has been hard hit by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the statement said. Issues like lack of housing, poverty, addictions and mental health have grown, while opportunities for fundraising has decreased.
Donations can still be made until Jan. 6, by going online to uwtol.ca. Donors will be entered to win a Pandora necklace and earring set donated by Michael’s Jewellers.
