The city's unemployment rate stood at 7.1 per cent in December, according to Statistics Canada labour market survey numbers.
The figure is up from 6.2 per cent for the same month last year, due largely to more people looking for work - 3,600 on that count, 500 more than in December 2015.
The number of people holding down jobs was 47,300, a 100-person increase, year over year, while the number of people of working age in the city rose by 500 to 50,800.
In November 2016, the unemployment rate was 6.5 per cent, with 47,200 working and 3,300 seeking work.
The figures are based on a three-month rolling average. The full breakdown is posted with this story at www.pgcitizen.ca.
