Unemployment rate rises to 6.6 per cent

The city's unemployment rate stood at 6.6 per cent in May, according to Statistics Canada labour market survey numbers issued Friday.

That's up from 6.0 per cent for the same month last year, when there were 49,700 people holding down jobs, compared to 45,600 last month.

The number of people looking for jobs was the same at 3,200 while the total not participating rose to 22,700 from 18,200. As well, the city's total labour force has declined to 48,800 from 52,600.

In April, the unemployment rate was 5.6 per cent, with 45,400 working and 2,700 seeking jobs while 23,400 were not participating.

The numbers are based on a three-month rolling average and do not say how many are working full-time and part-time.
