The city's unemployment rate was 5.3 per cent in August, according to Statistics Canada labour market survey numbers released Friday.
Month-over-month, that's a 0.8 percentage-point increase but a 2.2-percentage point decrease when comparing year-over-year numbers.
However, at 48,800 the number of people holding down jobs in the city continued on a downward trajectory,when compared to 49,000 working in July and 51,800 in August 2012.
The number of people unemployed but seeking work stood at 2,900 last month, up by 600 over July's total, while those of working age not seeking a job declined by 500. As well, the total labour force in the city rose by 500 to 51,800.
