The city's unemployment rate stood at 7.7 per cent in August, three percentage points higher than for the same month last year, according to Statistics Canada labour market survey numbers released Friday.
The number of people holding down jobs was 48,200, compared to 52,500 in August 2014, while the total looking for work added up to 4,000 compared to 2,600 the year before.
As well, the number of people of working age not seeking work was 19,500, up from 16,100 the year before.
The numbers did show a slight improvement from July, when the unemployment rate was 7.8 per cent, 47,200 were working, 4,000 were seeking work and 20,500 were not participating.
The numbers are based on a three-month rolling average and do not specify how many are working full time and part time.
