The city's unemployment rate remained at 8.1 per cent in February, unchanged from the month before, according to Statistics Canada numbers released Friday.

The city's unemployment rate remained at 8.1 per cent in February, unchanged from the month before, according to Statistics Canada numbers released Friday.

The number of people holding down jobs remained steady at 49,000 as did the number of unemployed but seeking work at 4,300.

In February 2011, the unemployment rate was a noticeably lower 5.7 per cent, but there were also fewer people working, at 48,200.

Initiatives Prince George market analyst Tara Bogh said there was fluctuation in job classifications in the city. Employment in government and health care each declined slightly but was offset by increases in manufacturing and in forestry, mining and oil and gas.

"We are approaching spring so companies are starting to think of the work that they need to do as winter ends," Bogh said.

Looking at the Cariboo economic region, unemployment rose to 7.8 per cent in February from 7.5 per cent in January, but the number of people working rose by 200 to 81,800, while those unemployed but looking for work rose by 300 to 6,900.

The numbers for the city and the economic region are based on a three-month rolling average.

Provincially, the unemployment rate remained at 6.9 per cent and nationally, it was 7.4 per cent, down 0.2 percentage points from January, both figures seasonally adjusted.
