The city's unemployment rate stood at 5.7 per cent last month, according to Statistics Canada labour market survey numbers released Friday, a big improvement over 12.5 per cent the year before.

It was also an improvement over the 6.1 per cent level seen in January as the number of people without jobs but looking for work declined by 300 to 2,900, although the drop was not a function of more people gaining employment.

Instead, the total holding down jobs declined by 800 to 48,200 while those not actively seeking work rose by 1,000 to 20,000 and the total of working age living in Prince George decreased by 1,200 to 51,100.
