The city's unemployment rate stood at 4.2 per cent last month, the same rate seen a year ago although there are now slightly fewer people holding down jobs, according to Statistics Canada labour market survey numbers released Friday.

In all, 49,600 people were working in December, 400 fewer than during the same month last year. However, that's still an increase of 100 jobs over November 2013 when the unemployment rate was 4.3 per cent.

The number of people looking for work was 2,200, the same amount as in November and December 2012. The number of people of working age not working and not seeking a job stood at 18,800, 100 fewer than the month before and 200 more than in December 2012.

There were 51,900 people of working age in the Prince George last month - 200 more than in November but 300 fewer than in December 2012.

"The low unemployment rate is indicative of a strong, growing economy that has a lot of job opportunities available for people looking to relocate to a city that offers a full range of urban amenities and a host of outdoor recreational activities," Initiatives Prince George chief executive officer Heather Oland said.

The numbers are based on a three-month rolling average.
