Unemployment rate dips to 4.1 per cent

The city's unemployment rate stood at a rock-bottom 4.1 per cent in June, according to Statistics Canada labour market survey numbers released this week.

Concurrent with that, 51,500 people held down jobs, the fourth straight month that figure was north of 50,000.

As well, 2,200 people were looking for work and 18,900 people of working age were not employed and not seeking work. The employment rate stood at 70.9 per cent.

At the same point last year, the unemployment rate was 5.9 per cent and 47,900 people were working, while 3,000 were seeking work and 21,500 were not participating. The employment rate at that time was 66.2 per cent.

The numbers are based on a three-month rolling average and do not separate full-time from part-time employment.

The accuracy of the June 2018 unemployment figure was plus or minus 0.6 percentage points 68 per cent of the time. For June 2017, it was plus or minus 0.9 points.
