Unemployment rate declines slightly

The city's employment picture is remained largely unchanged last month, according to Statistics Canada labour market survey numbers released Friday. The unemployment rate stood at 7.2 per cent, down slightly from 7.

The city's employment picture is remained largely unchanged last month, according to Statistics Canada labour market survey numbers released Friday.

The unemployment rate stood at 7.2 per cent, down slightly from 7.4 per cent in March, while the number of people holding down jobs declined by 100 to 49,100.

The total unemployed and seeking work also declined by 100, to 3,800 while those of working age but not seeking jobs rose by the same number to 18,200.

For April 2011, the unemployment rate was 5.8 per cent but the number working was 47,200, those unemployed but seeking work was 2,900 and those of working age but not seeking jobs was 21,000.

- The provincial government's new job search website is now up and running.

Found at www.workbc.ca, the site provide job seekers with a single portal to access job postings that are available within the provincial public service, posted directly to

WorkBC by employers, and those externally imported from other job boards like Workopolis, Monster and company sites.

In addition, jobs posted to the Service Canada Job Bank are also available from this new site.

A WorkBC Employment Services Centre was opened last month in downtown Prince George. It's located upstairs at 1511 Third Ave., just off Victoria Street downtown.
