Unemployment rate 7.7 per cent last month

The city's unemployment rate stood at 7.7 per cent in July, according to Statistics Canada labour market survey numbers released Friday. The figure is down slight from 7.8 per cent for the same month last year.

The city's unemployment rate stood at 7.7 per cent in July, according to Statistics Canada labour market survey numbers released Friday.

The figure is down slight from 7.8 per cent for the same month last year.

The number of people holding down jobs added up to 47,700, an 500-person increase. The city's labour force - made up of people of working age, either employed or unemployed - was 51,700, a 600-person rise.

The number of unemployed seeking work was unchanged at 4,000 and the number unemployed but not seeking a job was 20,400, down by 100 people.

The numbers are also largely unchanged from June when the unemployment rate was also 7.7 per cent. There were 46,800 people working, 3,900 unemployed, 21,400 not seeking work and the city's labour force totalled 50,600.

The accuracy of the July unemployment figure is plus or minus two percent, 67 per cent of the time.

The numbers are based on a three-month rolling average and do not separate full-time and part-time employment.
