The city's unemployment rate stood at 7.7 per cent in June, according to Statistics Canada labour market survey numbers.
The total represents a slight increase from the same point last year, when it was 7.4 per cent, but countering that, the number of people holding down jobs was actually higher last month, rising by 700 to 46,800.
The difference was largely to do with an increase in the number of people of working age living in the city, which stood at 50,600, compared to 49,800 a year ago. The number of unemployed seeking work rose by 200 to 3,900 while the total not participating was 21,400, down by 400.
In June, the unemployment rate was 6.6 per cent, 46,500 were working, 3,300 were seeking work and 22,200 were not participating. As well, the total labour force was 46,800.
Last month's unemployment figure is accurate to within plus or minus 1.4 percentage points, 68 per cent of the time.
The figures are based on a three-month rolling average and do not differentiate between full-time and part-time employment.
