Unemployment rate 6.3 per cent

The city's unemployment rate stood at 6.3 per cent in April, according to Statistics Canada labour market survey numbers issued Friday.

That's up from 4.7 per cent for the same month last year, although, at 47,500, there are now 800 more people holding down jobs.

The difference comes down to the number seeking work which stood at 3,200 - 900 more than there were in April 2016.

The city's employment rate was 65.7 per cent, up from 64.9 per cent a year ago.

In March, the unemployment rate was 7.7 per cent, with 46,900 working, 3,900 seeking work and 21,500 not participating. The employment rate was 65 per cent.

The numbers are based on a three-month rolling average and do not separate full-time and part-time employment.
