That's down from 5.6 per cent for the same month last year. However, the number of people holding down jobs has also declined, to 46,300 last month from 50,900 the year before.

Moreover, the city's total workforce declined to 48,500 from 53,800.

The total seeking work stood at 2,200 last month, down from 3,000 the year before, and those of working age not participating in the labour force was 22,900, up from 17,100.

In February, the unemployment rate was 4.4 per cent with 47,500 working.

The numbers are based on a three-month rolling average and do not show how many of the jobs are part-time.
