Even in the most difficult circumstances, financially speaking or otherwise, Prince George has once again shown its generosity.
The Prince George Hospice Dream Home Lottery is set to announce its 2020 winner next Thursday, Dec. 24 (aka Christmas Eve), as well as its second 50/50 jackpot.
At least two people will be surprised with big gifts this holiday season.
The Dream Home, located at 3955 Larisa Ct. in the Nechako View Subdivision, is valued at more than $700,000, while tickets for the second jackpot sold out on Friday night (Dec. 11), which means someone will join Lauraine Biech in becoming $150,000 richer.
The Prince George resident’s number was selected on Sept. 25 for the first 50/50 lottery draw.
Hospice Executive Director Donna Flood says she’s both humbled and thankful to see the community support its own neighbours and healthcare workers.
“In these unprecedented times, the difference that this lottery makes for our Hospice is unbelievable,” she explained, and has noted that the annual fundraiser is the most important as it supports the palliative care services and programs.
On average, the Prince George Hospice Society relies on more than $3 million each year to continue its services and operations.
According to its 2019-20 fiscal report, which ended on March 31, the 2019 Dream Home Lottery provided 35 per cent of the Hospice’s revenue, bringing in $1.35 million.
Proceeds from 2020’s installment are set to support both Rotary Hospice House beds and the bereavement, grief and education programs offered by the Society.
“We’re going to be able to continue to care for the people in our community because you have supported us in what we do,” Flood added.
“The second 50/50 [jackpot] that we’ve put in this year will ensure that we can provide the programs in the community that help support people in their homes and the people that care for them.”
Tickets for the 10th edition of the Dream Home officially sold out in September, just 90 days after the lottery was announced.
This is the second year in a row that all tickets for the lottery were purchased by local and regional residents.
The Dream Home and second 50/50 jackpot draws are set for Dec. 24 at 5 p.m.
