The University of Northern British Columbia (UNBC) will begin offering courses in its 20th academic year on Wednesday with indications of increased enrolment.
The numbers for the fall will not be known until later in September, but, an initial estimate indicates applications are up nearly eight percent over last year, UNBC officials said.
UNBC has been facing static if not declining enrollment.
According to provincial government projections, there were supposed to be the full-time equivalent (FTE) of 3,396 students enrolled by 2009-10 but the actual count was 3,005. Moreover, the undergraduate FTE stood at 2,393, or 81 per cent of the target of 2,942.
The term will kick or with an orientation week that starts Sunday with on-campus students moving into the residences.
Campus tours will be available on Monday from 9 a.m. to noon. for new students and will be followed up on Wednesday with an orientation at the Charles Jago Northern Sport Centre, 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.
A barbecue is set for the same day, 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., at the Agora Courtyard.
