UNBC's vice president of external relations is leaving his post on the hill for a job at city hall.

As of Sept. 1, Rob van Adrichem will start a new position as the city's director of external relations.

The hiring comes as a way to fulfill a priority identified by the new mayor and council to reconnect with the community, according to city manager Kathleen Soltis.

"This position will play an integral role in enhancing relationships within our city and region with the goal of advancing Prince George," she said in a press release.

In his 23-year tenure at UNBC, van Adrichem has developed strong ties throughout the province with many of the city's key partners, the press release said.

Van Adrichem started at the university in 1992 as a media officer, working his way up through the communications ranks before taking the vice president position in 2009.

"As a born-and-raised citizen of Prince George, Mr. van Adrichem has a deep understanding of this community and its strengths," said Soltis. "We are very excited about the expertise that Mr. van Adrichem will bring to our organization."

Van Adrichem will work with corporate communications specialist Mike Kellett. Communications staff are in the administrative services department, headed by general manager Walter Babicz.

Kellett has been the sole communications staffer at the city, following the January departure of manager Todd Corrigall.
