An online Truth and Reconciliation Talking Circle will be hosted by UNBC on Sept. 30 at 10 a.m. to honour the first National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.

Everyone is welcome to attend the virtual 90-minute event which features singing, dancing and storytelling as well as presentations from First Nations Studies Associate Professor Dr. Daniel Sims, First Nations Studies Assistant Professor Dr. Jessie King and English Professor Dr. Rob Budde. Special guest Kelsey Abraham will perform traditional dances.

“This Talking Circle is an opportunity for members of the community to learn about Truth and Reconciliation, acknowledge the progress that has been made and highlight the work that still needs to be done,” Vice-Provost Indigenous Initiatives Dr. Henry Harder said. “Through this Talking Circle we will also celebrate Indigenous culture and the resilience of those who have worked so hard to preserve it through the ravages of colonialism.”

The National Day for Truth and Reconciliation is also known as Orange Shirt Day. Organizers encourage all of those who will be tuning in for the event to wear orange on Sept. 30 to affirm every child matters and honour the experiences of Indigenous People.

“We look forward to welcoming individuals from across British Columbia and beyond to our online Talking Circle,” Brandon Prince, manager of the Office of Indigenous Initiatives, said. “As we recognize the first National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, we encourage every individual to take part in our event and events in their communities and commit to taking action to further the cause of Truth and Reconciliation.”
