UNBC staff vote to strike

Support workers at UNBC voted 91 per cent in favour of strike action, but have yet to set a day to walk off the job.

Support workers at UNBC voted 91 per cent in favour of strike action, but have yet to set a day to walk off the job.

"When we return to the table we will be carrying a strong strike mandate to ensure we achieve the best deal possible," Canadian Union of Public Employees Local 3799 president Caroline Sewell said in a news release.

The vote was conducted over the last week, but results weren't released until Tuesday. Sewell said the major issues include job security and wages.

Negotiations between the union -- which represents more than 300 non-faculty teaching staff, maintenance and facilities workers, lab assistants and administrative assistants and officers -- and the university aren't scheduled to resume until the fall.
