Depending on the city's generosity, CBC television personality Rick Mercer could be paying a visit to UNBC.

It all hinges on how much more money a group of UNBC international studies students can raise during this year's Spread the Net campaign to purchase insecticide-treated bed nets to protect the people of Africa from the spread of malaria.

So far, the group has raised about $3,030 has been raised - enough to purchase 303 nets - mostly on campus and is now hoping for additional help off the hill.

"We haven't really tapped into the community yet," said Don Ireland, one of the organizers.

The campaign, a partnership with UNICEF, has become a cause for Mercer, who will film an episode of his show, Rick Mercer Report, at the university where the most money has been raised by the end of February.

The mosquito that transmits the malaria parasite infects its victims most often overnight, which makes the use of bed nets essential. The victims of this disease are frequently children, especially those under the age of five.
