A professor of ecosystem science and management at the University of Northern British Columbia was appointed to the B.C. Forest Practices Board, the provincial government said Friday.

Dr. William McGill was appointed to the board for an initial two-year term.

McGill has 40 years of academic experience, including leadership as department chair, associate dean and dean.

He specializes in the study of biogeochemical cycles and their application to global change, sustainable land use, resource recovery and soil remediation.

A founding board member of the Haida Gwaii Higher Education Society, McGill is also vice chair of the Resources North Association, and vice president of the Prince George Chamber of Commerce.

Career highlights include being named a Fellow of the Agricultural Institute of Canada, of the Canadian Society of Soil Science and of the Soil Science Society of America.

The eight-member Forest Practices Board is B.C.'s independent watchdog for sound forest and range practices, reporting its findings and recommendations directly to the public and government.
