UNBC president George Iwama will not stay on for a second term at the school.

Iwama was appointed to a five-year term as president in 2009. His contract runs through June 2014 and includes a provision for a one-year paid research leave. The UNBC board will form a selection committee to find the school's next leader.

"I am still in awe of what has been created here and I feel privileged to have contributed to the development of this fantastic university," Iwama said.

The UNBC board offered Iwama a renewal, but he turned it down to "spend more time with family and to return to [his] other loves: science and research."
