UNBC is calling for speakers to participate at the first ever TEDxUNBC 2017 set to take place in September.
The theme of this year's conference is "dispelling misconceptions."
"This is so exciting. TED is renowned for drawing people's attention," said Grant Bachand, president and curator of TEDxUNBC. "TED is such an important part of our world these days and UNBC is a leader too. It only makes sense that we would organize a TED-like event using the TEDx platform to make something special. It is also encouraging to have UNBC stand behind such an important project like this."
Potential speakers will go through a three-phase process beginning with a submission of an application explaining why their talk dispels a misconception and why they should tell it.
Selected candidates will go on to Phase 2 where applicants will submit a three-minute video sample of their speaking skills.
All shortlisted candidates will take part in Phase 3 where they will be asked to audition in front of the TEDxUNBC Speaker Selection Committee.
All successful applicants will then be contacted shortly after the auditions.
TED is a nonprofit organization devoted to ideas worth spreading, usually formed as short talks.
TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to discuss and connect.
These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx where x equals an independently organized event.
"UNBC welcomes the opportunity to support the student organizers in hosting TEDxUNBC where new and inspiring ideas will be shared in a friendly, inclusive learning environment," said UNBC president Dr. Daniel Weeks.
"This is the latest example of how our student leaders are contributing to the betterment of our campus and community."
TEDxUNBC 2017 would like to encourage all community members to put forward an idea at www.tedxunbc.com/speakers.
The deadline is May 31.
"We want everyone to apply from topics in arts and sciences to society and culture," Bachand said.
TEDxUNBC 2017 will debut at UNBC on Sept. 30.
