The fuse has been lit for a flash mob to spark at UNBC. The event blows up on Wednesday and will, organizers hope, echo until the May 2 federal election.
"Now it's our turn. Come to the Agora Courtyard on Wednesday at 12 p.m. and show that you are excited about voting, that the youth vote is powerful, and most importantly let our politicians know that we will be voting," said a written statement from the Northern Undergraduate Student Society (NUGSS). They are calling this a vote mob and it is the university's answer to Rick Mercer's call.
Mercer, the CBC personality and social comedian, threw down the challenge for all universities in Canada to hold vote mobs to whip up democracy's next generation.
So far UNBC and a dozen others have committed to the event.
"This is a strictly nonpartisan event," said the NUGSS organizers. "We are not a protest, we are out to bring a positive message: getting youth excited about voting. Let's show how we can unite for a bigger cause, regardless of political opinion. Bring your energy, bring your friends, bring your excitement about participating in this election, but please leave your partisanship at home."
Participants are encouraged to dress up in Canadianna (red and white, flags, iconic clothing of any kind that indicates Canada).
