VANCOUVER - The UBC Thunderbirds got the ball rolling early, and they carried the momentum to a 4-0 victory over the UNBC Timberwolves at Thunderbird Stadium on Saturday.
Manpal Brar, Titouan Chopin, Lucas Reis, and Bryan Fong all scored for the Thunderbirds (2-0-1), who fired 15 shots in the game, with seven on goal.
Rob Goodey made three saves in his CIS debut for the Timberwolves (0-3-0), while UBC keepers Chad Bush and Jason Roberts combined for the clean sheet.
Brar got things going for the CIS No. 3 Thunderbirds in the 19th minute, receiving a solid through ball from Zach Verhoven and making no mistake on the finish, beating Goodey on the far post to give UBC the early 1-0 advantage.
UBC controlled the majority of the possession and continued to apply pressure throughout the first half, eventually getting rewarded for it in the 39th minute. Off a Kerman Pannu free kick from just outside the 18-yard box, Titouan Chopin got a head on the ball, steering it past Goodey to give the Thunderbirds a 2-0 lead going into halftime.
The Timberwolves held the game at 2-0 for the majority of the second half, but the Thunderbirds broke through again in the 79th minute, as substitute Lucas Reis headed home a Karn Phagura free kick to extend the lead to three before UBC captain Fong iced it in the 82nd minute, converting a header in the six-yard box off a Thunderbird corner kick.
Along with Goodey, Keenan Cartwright and Alex Nielson made their CIS debuts for the Timberwolves in the match.
UNBC will seek a weekend split from the Thunderbirds when they complete the back end of the doubleheader on Sunday, Sept. 4 at 1 p.m. in Vancouver.
The game will be available live on CanadaWest.TV, which is a subscription service.
