Two additional COVID-19 deaths recorded in B.C., 456 new cases

COVID-19 caseloads remain high in B.C.

In a written statement this afternoon (Feb. 24), Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry announced 456 more COVID-19 cases were recorded in the past 24 hours for a grand provincial total of 78,278.

Of the new cases, Northern Health recorded 20, bringing the authority total to 4,437 since last March.

Officials announced another two deaths today, which brings the province's toll to 1,338.

There are currently 4,668 active cases throughout B.C. with 237 people currently hospitalized, 64 of which are in ICU or critical care.

A total of 72,219 have been classified as fully recovered. 

British Columbia is expected to start informing people over age 80 about their vaccinations for COVID-19 starting next week as the province prepares to open mass clinics while doing more in-depth testing for variants.

Provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry said B.C. is in a phase of "vaccine hope and pandemic reality" but an age-based immunization plan will remain in place despite some calls to prioritize essential workers.

"I think that's been absolutely supported across the world," she said yesterday (Feb. 23). 

"Our goals are to minimize morbidity and mortality and to minimize the impact on society of the pandemic. And the primary goal that we have is to keep our health-care system functioning and to protect lives with the amount of vaccine that we have."

Any change in the immunization plan to prioritize both essential workers and people who can't work from home would be considered after enough vaccines are available, Henry said.

The province is expanding its pool of immunizers to include dentists, midwives and paramedics before 172 sites open to eventually offer a vaccine to everyone age 18 and up, she said.

In education, a total of 20 schools in School District 57 (SD57) have been flagged for exposure events while 23 Prince George-based schools have also been alerted since the start of the school this past September.

Northern Health's school-exposure section also explains the following:

  • Contact tracing is initiated to determine how the individual was infected and who they were in close contact with
  • We identify and notify close contacts who may be at an increased risk, and advise them to self-isolate and monitor for symptoms for 14 days
  • Only Public Health can determine who is a close contact
    • Learning groups, friends or other connections may not be determined to be a close contact
  • Public Health staff works closely with the school and school district throughout the case and contact management process to maintain close communication with the school community
