Nineteen times the women of Prince George have united on a September evening to establish their right to walk, unaccosted, on our city streets. On Sept. 16 the Take Back The Night March celebrates its 20th edition.

"The march involves women and children marching through the streets using our voices to sing and chant the message of anti-violence," said event co-ordinator Jillien Humphrey. "This event helps to empower those who have been victimized and seeks to light the way from victim to survivor... in solidarity in symbolic defiance of all perpetrators of violence."

As a way to involve women in this year's event there are scheduled activity sessions every Tuesday afternoon leading up to the Sept. 16 Take Back The Night event.

The activities are sign-making, activist art workshops, and bandanna making. To register for one of these events, please contact the SOS Society at 250-564-8302.

Humphry stressed that women are the focus of Take Back The Night marches here and all over the country, but children are highly connected to the issue and are welcome as well, and men are invited and encouraged to do their part as well.

"Men are welcome to come and support this event by cheering on the marchers and to take part in the reception after the march," she said.

In fact the reception is hosted by the Warriors Against Family Violence Committee in support of the women who take part in the event.

The march starts at 7 p.m. at City Hall.
