Author and former Prince George resident Denise Chong is presenting a free memoir writing workshop on Thursday at Artspace.

The celebrated non-fiction writer offers nuance to social history through personal tales.

"In researching our family stories, human nature is to hone in on the unknown or untold, and to peel back layers of family secrets," said the event workshop, which will be held at Books and Company from 7 to 8:30 p.m.

The session is aimed at storytellers and authors of all kinds - published aspiring or "just plain curious."

"Chong will discuss the writer's task of turning knowing into telling and the power and flaws of memory. She will also raise issues of privacy and respect in bringing such stories to the page," the event listing said.

Chong returned to Prince George last week to present at the Dr. Bob Ewert Dinner, where she introduced her second story's subject and one of the Vietnam War's most famous casualties, Kim Phuc. Chong was shortlisted for the Governor General's Literary Award for that book - The Girl in the Picture: The Kim Phuc Story, the Photograph and the Vietnam War - as well as her first book and family memoir, The Concubine's Children.

The workshop is free with a donation to Northern Medical Programs Trust.
