A vehicle thief caused minor injuries to a Prince George RCMP officer and civilian and extensive damage to a police truck before being apprehended Friday afternoon (Dec. 7).

The suspect, a 34-year-old Prince George man who is well known to local police for property-related offences, was taken into custody after taking a pickup truck earlier in the day.

Police received a report of a 2010 Chevrolet pickup getting stolen from a local business parking lot around noon. The truck was spotted in the College Heights area a little while later. Police called for surveillance from the RCMP helicopter and chose not to pursue the suspect in the interest of public safety.

The truck drove aggressively northbound on Ospika Boulevard and, eventually, plainclothes officers tried to box the vehicle in near 15th Avenue and Ewert Street. When the man tried to escape, he collided with a civilian vehicle and a police truck. The stolen vehicle was also heavily damaged.

The investigation is still ongoing.
