The fledgling McMillan Creek Fishing Park will be the site of a tree planting event this Saturday afternoon.
Trees and shrubs will be planted around the park and creek, and the public is encouraged to bring a shovel and get involved. The event runs from 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.
A grand opening for the park, located on PG Pulpmill Road near the Cameron Street Bridge, is slated for spring 2011.
The idea for the park began with a $50,000 donation in 1999 from Ron Lind, who wished to see a fishing park established at the confluence of McMillan Creek and the Nechako River.
This year, $114,000 will be sunk into developing the park with $76,000 coming from the Nechako fishing park trust, $20,000 from the Pacific Salmon Foundation, $1,000 from Terasen Gas Inc.,$20,000 from the city's development cost charge account for parklands and $17,000 from the city's capital expenditure reserve.
"This project in an example of the many great partnerships we have formed to diversify our community and the activities that are available within our city," said Mayor Dan Rogers in a statement issued this week.
