Prince George athlete Alyx Treasure has been chosen as the 2016 Newsmaker of the Year, according to the Citizen's online poll of local readers.
Treasure, the local high jumper who made the Olympic finals, took 111 votes for 32 per cent, while Julianna Ferguson, who was told she could not volunteer at Ness Lake Bible Camp any longer because of her supportive LGBTQ views, came in a close second with 27 per cent and 93 votes.
Grace Dove, a Kelly Road grad, who starred opposite Leonardo Di Caprio in The Revenant, took 15 per cent of the vote for a total of 51. The Tohme family, the first Syrian refugees to arrive in Prince George took 41 votes for a total of 12 per cent, and trailing was Chase Witala, a local hockey player who became the Prince George Cougars all-time points leader with six per cent and 22 votes. James Moore, the new UNBC chancellor took five per cent and 18 votes, and Rob McLeod, Marriott Courtyard hotel developer, took two per cent and seven votes. There was a total 343 votes.
