Everybody needs a new-to-you toy during the holidays and REAPS 18th Annual Recycle Toy Drive makes sure those in need will have something under the tree this Christmas.

The toy drive takes place Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Recycling and Environmental Action Planning Society's demonstration compost garden at 1950 Gorse St.

"It's pretty cool that after all these years we are still able to continue to hold the Recycle Toy Drive, thanks to the support of the community," said Terri McClymont, REAPS executive director.

To make room for the fresh crop of new toys coming to kids of all ages during the season, children can re-gift quality toys to experience the joy of giving.

The request is for toys and items suitable for children from newborn to 18 years old.

"Games, books, DVDs and CDs are something to keep in mind for the older children," said McClymont. "Dolls, stuffies, board games, trucks, Lego, even bassinets, strollers and high chairs are welcome."

There are 16 organizations that have requested donations, including group homes that host older teens. Carney Hill Neighbourhood Centre, Active Support Against Poverty, Teen Moms Alternative Learning Program, Haida House, Phoenix Transition House, and the Child Development Centre are all recipients of the recycle toy drive.

REAPS is also accepting donations for the local branch of the SPCA and is requesting items such as garbage bags, blankets, leashes, collars and pet carriers.

"I have volunteers coming in to sort, box and label, which is great," said McClymont, who saw almost 200 boxes go out the door last year. Then there are volunteers who will help deliver to the 16 groups on Monday.

"I'm pretty excited about it," said McClymont. "It's just great when you drop off the boxes to the organizations - they're always so excited because every year they're also seeing new faces and so it's nice to offer them support in this way."
