Winter tires are now required on many highways across the province.
Until March 31, passenger vehicles traveling almost all highways in northern B.C. will need tires rated for at least "mud and snow," marked with M+S on the sidewall. However, they're less effective than those with the mountain/snowflake symbol, which offer the best traction on snow, ice and in cold weather.
Also, tires with studs up to 3.5 mm high can be used until April 30, an extra month.
Signs are posted on each of the designated highways to advise motorists where winter tires are required. These are generally located approaching high mountain passes and interior highways where conditions can change from rain to snow very quickly.
Tips for getting ready include:
- Check for wear before installing tires and check tire pressure frequently
- Use four matched tires with the same amount of wear
- If you use a tire shop to change your tires, drop in now to avoid the long waits
- Ensure your vehicle's lights and windshield wipers are functioning properly
