A windy afternoon left one city resident with a mess to clean up after a gust knocked over a large spruce tree and left it blocking the street, taking out a power line and knocking over a fence in its path.
Police were dispatched at about 3:15 p.m. Saturday to the Gorse Street residence and a BC Hydro crew was called to fix the damage left in the tree's wake. But before that could happen, a second large tree left leaning precipitously out from the front yard of the house had to be cut down by a city abourist.
"Just the street lights are out," said BC Hydro lineman Ben Receveur. "I haven't seen many trees that size come down in town, but we had some pine trees come down [Saturday] morning. That second tree is paired up with the one that came down already and it's ready to fall. The tree that fell is rotted right at ground level, which is common for those trees, none of the root ball came up."
Thundershowers arrived late Saturday afternoon, sending soccer teams scattering for cover at Rotary Field.
"This is the kind of weather I would expect a lot of different calls," added Receveur. "It's wet and windy. This is my seventh call today."
Showers are also expected to fall on Father's Day Sunday, and this week's forecast is not looking promising for sun-worshipers.
Today's high is only expected to reach 16 C under cloudy skies, and similar conditions are expected Tuesday and Wednesday, with highs of 18 C and 20C respectively and a chance of showers both days. A mix of sun and cloud is expected Thursday with a a high of 22 C.
