A man has been sentenced to two years in jail after taking a swing at a store employee while attempting to shoplift.

Benjamin Jerome Sampare was issued the term Wednesday in Prince George provincial court, a day after he was arrested.

Sampare committed the offence at a store in Parkwood Mall and the store's loss prevention officer followed him to the 100 block of George St. where RCMP members arrested him.

When six chocolate bars as well as gloves and a face mask were found in his possession, the charge of assault was raised to robbery.

Sampare was living in Prince George but has convictions from incidents on Vancouver Island.
